Cardiac
myxomas: Imaging characteristics.
Cardiac myxomas are rare tumours, however, they
represent 50% of primary cardiac tumours. Computed
tomography and magnetic resonance imaging usually
show a round or oval-shaped, lobulated inhomogenous
intracardiac (intracavitary) mass which is asymptomatic
in most cases. CT is useful in imaging the mass as well
as possible concomitant findings or complications.
MRI shows the tumour more accurately as well as its
origin -there is a predilection for the intratrial septum,
with the majority arising from an area adjacent to the
fossa ovalis- while cine-sequences may show tumor
prolapse through the atrioventricular valves.
